  National Sustainable Agriculture Colation Announces Introduction of Local Foods Bill
Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Representative Chellie Pingree of Maine and 35 original co-sponsors introduced the Local Farms, Food, and Jobs Act (S. 1773, H.R. 3286). Bill addresses production, aggregation, processing, marketing, and distribution needs to access growing local and regional food markets. The bill intended to assist consumers by improving access to healthy food.

  Grow Youngstown Offers scholarships to OEFFA Conference
Three qualifying farmers will be awarded scholarships to the 2-day conference to be held February 18-19, 2012. See the Scholarship Press Release for details.

  Organic Certification USDA Reimbursements
Remember to see if you can receive reimbursement of qualifying expenses for USDA certified organic operators. Go to website for your state's application form, or contact Betsy Rakola, USDA National Organic Program cost-share manager, at Betsy.Rakola@ams.usda.gov or call 202-720-3252.

  Vineyard Expansion Assistance Program Gives Grants to Ohio Grape Growers
$2,000 grants, funded by Ohio Dept. of Agriculture, awarded in 2011 for an expansion acre of high-quality, high-value grapes.

Chainsaw Training Available from NEOFA (PDF brochure)
Chainsaw safety, maintenance and safe operation training clinics are available by contacting Dave Hively (330-332-0728) or Jim Elze (jtelze@sbcglobal.net) Three seperate hands-on, day long clinics for the occasional user and more serious cutters held by Northeast Ohio Forestry Association (NEOFA) for a nominal fee. NEOFA is a non-profit promoting conservation and good forest management. Clinics scheduled as needed, see Calendar.
Ohio Direct Marketing Survey Research Report (PDF)
Ohio State University October 2009 reports research results on "changes in marketing practices and market access for Ohio food producing farmers and other key players in Ohio's food chain." Ohio is in top 10 direct marketers.
USDA 'Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food' Blog

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack launched a new blog on the 'Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food' web site to highlight local and regional food systems and the connections being made between farmers and consumers. The new online resource advances a national conversation about food and agriculture.
